November 8 is National Lung Cancer Screening Day, and hospitals in Vermont, New York, and New Hampshire are hosting screening events to try to catch cancer early while it can still be treated, WVNY-TV reports.
“If we catch lung cancer when it’s small, we’re looking at easier treatment, lower costs, and better outcomes,” says Beth Zigmund, M.D., director of the UVM Cancer Center’s lung screening program and associate professor of radiology at the Larner College of Medicine. “Even if the cancer is a later stage, the sooner we know about it, the more we can help.”
Though for some it may be too late to get a screening this weekend—which may require a referral from a primary care provider—physicians say that remembering to get regular checkups is still critical.
The event is happening at ten participating sites, including nine in our region. All events are on November 8 unless listed.
