Whittney Barkhuff, M.D., Ph.D., medical director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Golisano Children’s Hospital at UVM Health and associate professor of pediatrics at the Larner College of Medicine, was interviewed by NBC5 about recently completed renovations in Vermont’s only NICU.
Dr. Barkhuff said the NICU cares for around 500 babies per year. That’s why she said the first upgrades to the unit since it opened in 1988 are a big step forward in care for Vermont’s youngest and most vulnerable patients.
The improvements include an updated entrance with a new badge-access security system and two new private rooms. Barkhuff said she hopes these updates are the first of many steps toward creating a space that matches the level of care her team provides to patients and their families.
“We feel a great sense of responsibility to take the best possible care of our patients, and we now feel like our physical space more accurately reflects the excellent care we’re providing,” she said.
