UVM research led by Leigh Knodler, Ph.D., Larner associate professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, found that specialized cells lining the intestines can limit salmonella’s access to nutrients the bacteria need to grow. Understanding these natural defense systems may lead to new treatments for salmonella and other bacterial infections.
