Through Larner faculty–led courses in health care management, epidemiology, biostatistics, social and behavioral health, and more, students receive well-rounded preparation that equips them to tackle existing and emerging public health threats both locally and globally.
The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) recently re-accredited both of the University of Vermont’s graduate programs for the maximum seven-year term. Obtaining this accreditation is an exceptional accolade from the CEPH that reflects the programs’ rigor, integrity, and commitment to excellence. The CEPH did not identify any compliance concerns across eight categories, only emphasizing the programs’ success.
The criteria for the CEPH evaluate institutions on governance, faculty qualifications and scholarships, student outcomes, community engagement, inclusivity and cultural humility, experiential learning, and continuous quality improvement. This accreditation ensures that UVM, along with other programs across the nation, meets the nationally recognized standards for graduate public health instruction.
“Achieving full compliance is a rare outcome nationally and positions the program for continued growth and impact.” — Jan Carney, M.D., M.P.H.
“CEPH’s decision affirms the exceptional quality of public health education at UVM and the dedication of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners,” said Jan Carney, M.D., M.P.H., associate dean for public health and health policy, chief of the Division of Public Health, director of the Graduate Public Health Program, and professor of medicine. “Achieving full compliance is a rare outcome nationally and positions the program for continued growth and impact.”
Accreditation of the Master of Public Health Program, now in its 12th year at UVM, underscores the quality of instruction, rigor of competency-based curriculum, effectiveness of advising and student support systems, and depth of community organization partnerships.
Public health at UVM continues to grow with the newly launched Doctor of Public Health Program—also included in this accreditation—which enrolled 25 students in its first cohort beginning in fall 2026. The program is designed to train students in health policy, critical public health thinking, and strategic management and communication of health information.
The program was also recognized as the #1 Master of Public Health Program in Vermont for 2027 by PublicAdministrationPolicy.org. The program is the only one in the state that is nationally CEPH certified.
