News Medical: Automated ultrasound offers reliable alternative for screening women with dense breasts (OCT 8, 2026)
Brian L. Sprague, Ph.D., co-leader of the Population Sciences and Cancer Outcomes Program at the University of Vermont Cancer Center, and professor of Surgery at the UVM Larner College of Medicine, is senior author of a study that found automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) and handheld ultrasound (HHUS) had similar cancer detection rates in women with dense breasts, while ABUS had a lower false-positive rate, thus demonstrating that ABUS is a viable alternative to HHUS and can expand supplemental ultrasound screening capacity at radiology clinics.
