In an article in Real Simple on hobbies that help people age better and live longer, Turner Osler, M.D., professor emeritus of surgery at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine, advocates for Tai Chi, an ancient martial art that originated in China and involves slow, gentle movements and controlled breathing.
Research shows that the practice may help prevent falls in older adults, which is crucial for maintaining independence and quality of life, Dr. Osler says. “Physically, it builds leg and core strength and improves posture and balance. Mentally, Tai Chi asks you to pay close attention, remember sequences, and coordinate breathing with movement. Clinical studies have found improvements in thinking, memory, and mood in regular practitioners,” he explains.
