WCAX-TV: Rural Vermont hospitals launch new residency program to combat primary care shortage (SEP 29, 2026)

To keep UVM medical students in Vermont after they graduate and solve the shortage of primary care physicians, rural Vermont hospitals are launching a new residency program. About one-third of Vermont’s doctors trained at UVM, and the Green Mountain Care Board wants that number to grow. John King, M.D., M.P.H., is the founding director of the new residency program, Maple Mountain Vermont Family Medicine Residency Program, which requires residents to stay at least five years in Vermont after they complete the program. Medical residents tend to stay in the communities where they did their training.
