Bell Talks RSV with WCAX
Rebecca Bell, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics at the Larner College of Medicine and a pediatric critical care physician at the University of Vermont (UVM) Children’s Hospital, talks RSV with WCAX-TV.
Hospital leaders say fewer newborns and infants are admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit at the UVM Children’s Hospital for respiratory care after catching one of the most aggressive viruses, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV—and they directly attribute the improvement to the RSV immunization for infants that was approved in the summer of 2023.
“RSV is the most common reason for children under one year old to be admitted to the hospital,” Bell said in a statement. “The kids that get the sickest are the youngest kids—particularly under six months old. Every year, our PICU is full of infants critically ill with RSV infection.”
All infants under 8 months in Vermont can get the shot at UVM Health Network hospitals.
