Larner Professor of Medicine Steven Ades, M.D., M.Sc., of the UVM Cancer Center, says former President Joe Biden’s cancer diagnosis is not a death sentence, WCAX-TV reports. Experts say prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States and worldwide, and that it is very treatable.
The mortality rate of the cancer has dropped by half in the last 30 years, in part due to more advanced screenings, Ades says. He suggests men have a discussion about screenings with their doctor, especially if they are 50 or older.
“There’s a lot of hope for the president and men like him who are diagnosed with prostate cancer that has advanced or that has spread. It may not be curable, but a man in 2025 who’s diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer can live for years and sometimes decades,” Ades said.
