A Message From Our Program Director

Greetings,

Welcome to the University of Vermont Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency Program! We are a distinguished ACGME-accredited three-year program serving as the medical lifeline for over one million people across Vermont and upstate New York. Our residents train at Vermont's only Level 1 trauma center and pediatric trauma center, providing care to a diverse population spanning from urban Burlington to the most remote mountain communities in our region.

What truly sets our program apart is our commitment to training emergency physicians who can excel anywhere in the world. Our residents develop expertise across the full spectrum of healthcare resources; from our state-of-the-art tertiary care center that serves as the regional referral hub, to critical access hospitals in rural communities where resources are limited but clinical decision-making must be flawless. This unique training in resource-limited environments creates physicians with unparalleled adaptability and clinical judgment. When our graduates can successfully navigate complex cases with minimal resources in a remote Vermont hospital, they can practice emergency medicine with confidence in any setting worldwide.

Beyond our distinctive clinical training, we offer exceptional opportunities in point-of-care ultrasound, wilderness medicine, and global health. Our world-renowned faculty are deeply invested in each resident's success, providing mentorship that extends far beyond clinical skills. We pride ourselves on delivering socially conscious, high-quality care while fostering the same values in our trainees.

Our mission is to develop emergency physicians who are not only highly competent and clinically versatile, but also socially conscious leaders deeply invested in the health and wellbeing of their communities. We are committed to helping each resident become the very best version of themselves, both professionally and personally.

I believe that the best emergency physicians are those who can adapt, innovate, and provide excellent care regardless of their environment or available resources. Whether you envision yourself practicing in a major academic center, serving a rural community, working in global health, or pursuing fellowship, our program will prepare you to thrive. We cultivate physicians who understand that emergency medicine is not just about clinical excellence; it's about being a pillar of strength and hope for communities in their most vulnerable moments.

Vermont offers an exceptional quality of life that enhances both your training experience and personal wellbeing. Burlington is a vibrant and diverse city nestled between the stunning Green Mountains and the pristine waters of Lake Champlain. Our residents and faculty enjoy year-round outdoor adventures from hiking, biking, and swimming in the crystal-clear lake during summer, to world-class skiing just minutes away in winter. It's not uncommon for our attendings and residents to catch first tracks on the mountain before a shift or unwind with a sunset ski after a long day in the ED. The people of Vermont are genuinely welcoming and authentic, creating a supportive community that extends far beyond the hospital walls.

I invite you to explore our website and discover how we can help you develop into the emergency physician, and person, you aspire to become!
