Research interests: electrical and calcium signaling in brain capillaries; cerebral small vessel disease

Saúl earned his MSc and PhD in Neuropharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (Cinvestav) in Mexico City. He later joined the Department of Pharmacology at UVM as a postdoctoral fellow in the Nelson Lab and has recently transitioned to an Assistant Professor position in the Research Scholar Pathway.

His current research focuses on understanding how electrical and calcium signaling in brain capillaries regulates cerebral blood flow and how disruption of these mechanisms contributes to cerebral small vessel disease. His work combines in vivo two-photon imaging and cerebral blood flow measurements to investigate ion channel function and cell-cell communication within the neurovascular unit.

Saúl is the recipient of a 2026 American Heart Association Career Development Award and was the winner of the 2026 Viridis Montis Early Career Investigator Challenge in Cardiovascular Disease. His previous support includes an American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship and an Early Career Research Award from the Cardiovascular Research Institute of Vermont.

Saúl has especially valued the opportunity to develop his leadership skills through the ECAC in an environment where he has felt supported by both his peers on the committee and members of the CVRI Board of Directors. The ECAC has given him space to take on new responsibilities, share ideas, and learn from others. He has also appreciated the opportunity to interact with colleagues from clinical and basic science backgrounds, which has helped him think more broadly about the translational relevance of his basic science research.

Tanesha went to Russell Sage College for her undergraduate education where she majored in Biology. This was then followed by her medical education at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine. She started her Internal Medicine Residency at University of Vermont Medical Center where she has been involved in clinical research.

She has presented multiple times at AACVPR Annual Meeting including a recent honorable mention for the Beginning Researcher Award Presentation. She is also part of multiple clinical trials as a co-PI. Following her completion of fellowship, she will be joining faculty at UVM Medical Center and UVM. 

This is her fourth and final year on the ECAC and she has enjoyed collaborating with her basic science colleagues and coming up with programs to help attract more clinicians to research.
