BIO
Dr. Michael Toth is a Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology. He has run a laboratory studying skeletal muscle biology that has been funded for >25 years by NIH that includes studies in model systems and human patients. Clinical studies have been conducted in a range of populations, from young healthy volunteers to older adult patients with complex medical conditions or in the acute, post-surgical period. His laboratory assesses skeletal muscle structure and function in humans using a variety of clinical and basic science research techniques, from in-depth molecular and cellular phenotyping of human patients to randomized, controlled clinical trials. He is recognized as an expert in how aging and acute and chronic disease impact skeletal muscle biology and the use of rehabilitative interventions to mitigate the detrimental effects of these conditions, with over 130 peer-reviewed publications. He has served as a reviewer for NIH F, K, R, P, and U series grants as both a sitting and ad hoc member of numerous NIH study sections. More recently, he was named as the co-Director of the new LCOM Office of Research and Engagement.
