BIO

Mel Symeonides is an Assistant Professor (Research Track) in the Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics at UVM. After completing his PhD and postdoctoral research at UVM, Mel worked as a Faculty Scientist in MMG (2021-2024). He was hired as an Assistant Professor in MMG and the TGIR COBRE in April 2024. Mel is interested in understanding the biology and behavior of the virus-infected cell, with a long-term goal of finding new ways to cure chronic viral infections. His primary interest lies in HIV-1, which is currently incurable (without highly invasive and risky irradiation and bone marrow transplant). In parallel, Mel studies immune responses to viral infection, both innate (e.g. direct killing of HIV-1-infected T cells by Natural Killer cells) and adaptive (e.g. rotavirus-specific cytotoxic T cell responses in infants post-infection or vaccination). His favorite research methods are live cell fluorescence imaging and flow cytometry.
