BIO

Mark K Fung, MD PhD, is a Clinical Scholars Track Professor at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. He has served in roles such as a trustee of the UVM Health Medical Group, Medical Staff President at UVMMC, Director of Clinical Laboratories at UVMMC, Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs and Quality, Vice Chair of Population Health, and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.   He was previously the medical director of the Blood Bank and the Histocompatibility Transplant Laboratory, and continues to direct the Cellular Therapy Laboratory, and oversees Point of Care Testing at UVMMC.  He continues to practice as a pathologist in the areas of Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking and Clinical Chemistry at UVMMC.  He is the chair of the Tissue Safety Committee for UVMMC.  He is a Master Educator in the Teaching Academy at LCOM. He is board certified in Clinical Pathology and Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking with continuous certification by the American Board of Pathology and previously approved as a laboratory director for histocompatibility testing by American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI).     

Nationally and internationally, Dr. Fung has served in various leadership roles for professional and research organizations including for the College of American Pathologists (CAP), Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies Advancing (AABB), ASHI, and the Biomedical Excellence for Safe Transfusions (BEST) Collaborative.  He has received the CAP Lifetime Achievement Award and is a Honorary Member of the BEST Collaborative after serving more than 10 years in leadership roles for both organizations.  He is currently the vice president for the American Board of Pathology, a trustee for the Project Santa Fe Foundation/Clinical Lab 2.0, treasurer for the Vermont Medical Society, and chair for the Recipient Hemovigilance subgroup of the International Society for Blood Transfusions (ISBT).  He has authored or co-authored over 75 peer-reviewed papers, multiple book chapters, and was the editor-in-chief for two editions of a textbook.  Dr. Fung is actively engaged in the teaching and mentoring of medical students, residents, and junior faculty, with a particular interest in helping mentees develop the foundation and skills for a successful career with a scholar’s mindset, whether in academic or community practice.

His clinical and research interests include the standardization of transfusion reaction and error reporting, development of national and international transfusion guidelines, the role of the laboratory in population health, laboratory literacy as a component of health literacy, and the use of artificial intelligence in promoting laboratory literacy for patients.  Dr. Fung continues his work to empower physicians, staff, and patients through practice-based collaborative projects in the above areas that benefit both those in the local community and globally.
