Kelly J. Butnor, MD, is a Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine in the Clinical Scholar Pathway at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. She has served in roles, such as Director of Pulmonary Pathology and is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Her clinical and/or research interests include neoplastic and non-neoplastic lung pathology, including occupational lung disease, and mesothelioma. Dr. Butnor is actively engaged in educating learners at a variety of levels, including post-graduate colleagues, fellows, residents, and medical students.
Internationally recognized for her work in the staging of lung cancer, occupational lung
disease, and mesothelioma, Dr. Butnor has chaired the Lung Cancer Panel for the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting (ICCR) and the Thoracic Cancer Protocol Review Committee for the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Cancer Committee. She serves on the United States-Canadian Mesothelioma Reference Panel, the Pulmonary Pathology Society (PPS) Program Committee, the International Mesothelioma Panel, and was also a member of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) 8th Edition Thoracic Expert Panel. Her publications focus on the pathologic staging of lung cancer, the diagnosis of mesothelioma, and pulmonary fibrosis. A dedicated educator, she has received the departmental Pathology Attending Teaching Award and been invited to serve as Visiting Professor at several institutions.
