BIO
Katherine Ann Devitt, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Robert Larner, MD College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and an Attending Hematopathologist at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She serves as Hematopathologist, Medical Director of Flow Cytometry, and Hematopathology Fellowship Director, and is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with subspecialty certification in Hematopathology. Dr. Devitt’s clinical expertise includes the diagnostic evaluation of hematologic malignancies through peripheral blood, bone marrow, lymph node, cytogenetic, and flow cytometric analyses. Her practice integrates laboratory medicine, cytogenetics, and advanced flow cytometry, with a strong focus on evidence based diagnostic reporting, multidisciplinary consultation, and quality assurance. She is deeply engaged in medical education, providing clinical teaching to medical students, residents, fellows, and laboratory professionals across multiple settings.
Recognized nationally for her contributions to clinical cytometry and hematopathology, Dr. Devitt has played a prominent role in advancing standards for flow cytometry validation, assay development, and quality assurance. She serves as Senior Councilor for Quality and Chair of the Quality and Standards Committee of the International Clinical Cytometry Society (ICCS) and is an active member of the College of American Pathologists Diagnostic Immunology and Flow Cytometry Committee, including authorship and leadership roles on checklist subcommittees and proficiency testing initiatives. Dr. Devitt has contributed to multiple Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) documents shaping international laboratory practice standards. An accomplished clinical scholar, she has authored over 40 peer reviewed publications, including original research, educational cases, and standards-based guidance, many of which involve trainee mentorship. A dedicated educator, she has developed and directed curricula at the undergraduate, medical student, resident, fellow, and national continuing education levels, and serves as invited faculty for national and international courses in clinical cytometry and hematopathology.
As an academic hematopathologist and laboratory medical director, Dr. Devitt is committed to advancing high quality, accessible diagnostic care through rigorous validation practices, multidisciplinary collaboration, and trainee centered education. Her current work focuses on optimizing flow cytometry and cytogenetic testing workflows, integrating evolving WHO classifications into clinical reporting, and leading quality focused initiatives that improve diagnostic accuracy and laboratory efficiency. Through her leadership roles at LCOM, UVMMC, and in national professional organizations, she remains dedicated to strengthening the bridge between clinical service, education, and scholarly contribution, while mentoring the next generation of pathologists and laboratory leaders.
