BIO
John M. Kennedy, MD, is an Assistant Professor (Clinical Scholar Pathology) in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. He is board‑certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and completed subspecialty fellowship training in Genitourinary Surgical Pathology, with additional expertise in Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Surgical Pathology. Dr. Kennedy serves as the CLIA Director and Director of Quality Assurance for the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory, as well as the Subspecialty Medical Director for Genitourinary Surgical Pathology at the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC). He contributes to multiple UVMMC and UVM Health committees focused on quality, patient safety, and laboratory operations, including the UVM Health Quality Committee and Laboratory Quality Assurance and Improvement Committee. His research interests include improving the classification and risk stratification of genitourinary neoplasms and advancing the quality and efficiency of surgical pathology testing. He is actively involved in resident and medical student education through clinical teaching and formal didactics.
Dr. Kennedy is a recognized local and regional expert in genitourinary surgical pathology and led the strengthening of genitourinary subspecialty expertise during the department’s transition to a subspecialty surgical pathology model. He has led major quality improvement initiatives, including standardizing prostate core biopsy reporting across UVMMC and the UVM Health Network and led a quality improvement project demonstrating that reduced histologic levels in prostate biopsies maintain diagnostic yield while improving efficiency and lowering costs. Dr. Kennedy has authored multiple peer‑reviewed publications and presented award‑winning research at the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) Annual Meeting. As an educator, he has developed and delivered core residency curricula in genitourinary pathology and mentored multiple residents whose work has resulted in national presentations and peer‑reviewed publications. His educational excellence has been recognized through repeated nominations for the Pathology Residency Teaching Award.
Dr. Kennedy is committed to advancing high‑quality, safe, and efficient anatomic pathology services at UVMMC. His current initiatives focus on strengthening regulatory compliance and accreditation readiness, refining laboratory processes to improve quality and operational efficiency, and contributing to regional laboratory inspections as an inspector for the College of American Pathologists (CAP). He is dedicated to sustaining and expanding subspecialty expertise in genitourinary surgical pathology and to training future generations of surgical pathologists through clinical teaching, structured didactics, and mentorship.
