BIO
Jason Stumpff is a professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at the Larner College of Medicine and Co-Leader of the Cancer and Host Interactions Research Program within the UVM Cancer Center. Jason and his research team explore one of biology’s most fundamental processes—cell division—and its connection to human disease. Using a combination of cell biology and biophysics, they investigate how chromosomes, which contain the cell’s genetic material, are organized and moved during division, and what happens when errors in this process occur.
Errors in chromosome segregation lead to aneuploidy, a condition linked to cancer, miscarriages, and genetic disorders. Jason’s research focuses on understanding the molecular players that control this process and how defects in these systems contribute to disease. His team is also investigating whether molecules involved in cell division could serve as targets for new cancer therapies.
