Throughout his distinguished career, he has held significant leadership positions, including serving as the Director of the Division of Perinatal and Pediatric Pathology from 1997 to 2022 and Chair of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Women and Infants Hospital. Dr. Pinar is triple board-certified in General Pediatrics, Anatomic Pathology, and Pediatric and Developmental Pathology. He has also served as the official Lead Pathologist for the Stillbirth Collaborative Research Network (SCRN), providing expert oversight for the pathology components of this national network. His primary clinical and research specializations involve causes of stillbirth and placental and umbilical cord abnormalities. Dr. Pinar is currently actively engaged in educating UVM medical students and residents on topics such as placental development and pathology.

Nationally and internationally recognized for his contributions to perinatal pathology, Dr. Pinar has served as an advisor to the Surgeon General of the United States and as a consultant for the National Children's Study (NCS). His extensive scholarly portfolio includes over 130 peer-reviewed publications and 7 book chapters, and he is the author of the book "Normal Developmental Biology of the Human Placenta," with a second edition expected in late 2026. His research has significantly advanced the field, particularly in developing international consensus for stillbirth classification systems.

A highly decorated educator, Dr. Pinar has received the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award from the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University on six occasions between 1997 and 2017, as well as the Medical Staff Association Distinguished Service Award. He has developed robust curricula, including the ACGME-accredited Fellowship in Pediatric and Developmental Pathology, and has led pathology clinical electives for nearly 30 years. Dr. Pinar's service to the field is further highlighted by his roles as Secretary-Treasurer of the Society for Pediatric Pathology and his work as a reviewer for prestigious journals, including Placenta, Pediatric and Developmental Pathology, Fetal and Pediatric Pathology, The Lancet, and the British Medical Journal. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal, Placenta, and Perspectives in Pediatric and Developmental Pathology.

Dr. Pinar’s current missions include using thousands of de-identified digital pathology images in perinatal pathology, including placental and fetal/neonatal postmortem images, to develop an AI tool using a bottom-up approach to address problems facing obstetric patients and pregnancy-related fetal and neonatal pathologies.

An addition to create an online perinatal and placental pathology curriculum and a study tool with available digital resources to facilitate and improve the teaching of this topic for pathology housestaff.

Currently, he is actively working on the addition to the book he authored in 2009, in collaboration with the Division of Maternal and Fetal Medicine at the University of Utah.
