BIO

Dr. Clayton R. Wilburn, MD, DABCC is an Associate Professor on the clinical scholar pathway in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Larner College of Medicine. He is a board‑certified Clinical Pathologist (American Board of Pathology) and a Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry, one of only a small number of physicians nationwide with this advanced board certification. In addition to clinical chemistry, he specializes in clinical informatics, test utilization, population health, and resident education. Dr. Wilburn holds several major leadership roles within the University of Vermont Health System, serving as the Director of Clinical Informatics for Laboratory Medicine and the Systems Medical Director of Clinical Chemistry. At the University of Vermont Medical Center, he serves as the Medical Director of Clinical Chemistry, Immunology, Specimen Receiving and Phlebotomy. He has also served as Medical Director of Point‑of‑Care Testing. In these roles, he oversees the largest sections of the UVMMC clinical laboratories and provides 24/7 expert consultation to regional providers, impacting patient care across Vermont and New York. His institutional service includes key committee leadership, notably as Chair of the UVMMC Test Utilization Committee, and membership on the Care Delivery Optimization Group, Clinical Decision Support Committee, Clinical Informatics Team, and EPIC Super Users Group.

Dr. Wilburn’s regional contributions include serving as an expert consultant to the Vermont Department of Health Scientific Advisory Panel during the COVID‑19 pandemic. Nationally, he holds/ has held committee roles with the College of American Pathologists, American Society for Clinical Pathology, and the Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine as the chair of the CME subcommittee. He has also served as a Co‑Investigator on eight NIH‑funded studies, providing oversight of CLIA‑certified laboratory testing and interpretation. His publications focus on applying laboratory data to population health initiatives and lab cybersecurity. Locally he completely redesigned the pathology resident chemistry rotation curriculum and serves on the Resident and Fellow Quality Council. In 2018, he was recognized for his efforts in Pathology Resident education by being selected by the residents to receive the Pathology Attending Teaching Award. As a result of his strong interest in and contributions to Pathology Resident education, he was selected to serve as the Associate Program Director of our Pathology Residency Training Program for two years. He serves as a mentor to two colleagues, Dr. Mark Fung and Dr. Hanna Loving, in the fields of clinical chemistry, immunology, and point-of-care testing to support their roles in coverage of those services.

Through his many roles in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Dr. Wilburn looks to elevate laboratory results beyond their traditional role in healthcare to be a driver of individual patient and population health. He looks to leverage not only the patient’s laboratory data, but also the data of the system as a whole to improve the quality and affordability of, as well as access to care for all patients. In lockstep with this initiative is the clinical informatics drive to support thriving healthcare teams that are enhanced by technology, not dictated by it.
