BIO

Christopher Attaway, MD, MSc, is a Clinical Scholar Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. He is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with subspecialty board certifications in Cytopathology and Medical Microbiology. Dr. Attaway serves as Sub-section Director of Parasitology within the clinical microbiology laboratory and is actively engaged in delivering high-quality diagnostic services. His clinical and research interests span infectious disease diagnostics, laboratory utilization, and medical education. Prior to his current role, Dr. Attaway completed fellowships in Cytopathology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Medical Microbiology at the Cleveland Clinic, following his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Pennsylvania.


Dr. Attaway is nationally recognized for his contributions to clinical microbiology and pathology education. He serves on the Microbiology Committee with the College of American Pathologists and is Co-Chair of the Microbiology Special Interest Group for the American Society for Clinical Pathology’s Curriculum, Educational Resource, and Scientific Advisory Committee. His scholarly work includes peer-reviewed publications on emerging diagnostic technologies, artificial intelligence applications in microbiology, and innovative educational strategies. He has presented research and given talks at regional and national meetings, including ASCP, ASM, and USCAP. A dedicated educator, Dr. Attaway completed the Measey Medical Education Fellowship during residency at the University of Pennsylvania and was honored as a 40 Under Forty honoree by ASCP. 


As an academic pathologist and clinical microbiologist, Dr. Attaway is committed to advancing diagnostic accuracy, optimizing laboratory workflows, and enhancing education for trainees and laboratory professionals. His current initiatives include streamlining laboratory processes and reporting, developing structured frameworks for educational content, and implementing quality improvement projects to improve laboratory efficiency, communication, and patient outcomes. Dr. Attaway’s vision emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation in medical education, and equitable access to high-quality laboratory services across Vermont and the surrounding region.
