Dr. Bei Zhang, MD, PhD, MLS (ASCP), is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Vermont Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine. She holds multiple leadership roles, including Director of Innovative Curriculum Design and Instruction, Director of the master’s degree in Pathology, and Director of the Pathology Museum at UVM. Recognized as a Distinguished Educator within the UVM Teaching Academy, Dr. Zhang has made significant contributions to medical and graduate education through her expertise in curriculum and course design and instructional innovation.
Dr. Zhang earned her M.D. in clinical medicine, a Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology, and a master’s degree in histology and embryology. Early in her career, she taught at a liberal arts university in the U.S. South, where she was honored as Professor of the Year at Thomas University in Georgia and later received an instructional technology award at Michigan State University. She holds an ESME certificate in Medical Education from the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE).
In her teaching, Dr. Zhang emphasizes effortful learning and is actively involved in integrated pathology and biochemistry education within the medical and graduate curriculum. She has published widely in medical education, contributing peer-reviewed journal articles and books on various educational methods, pathology and biochemistry topics.
Her professional accolades include recognition as a Distinguished Author by the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science and the Association of Biochemistry Educators' Distinguished Scholar Award. Dr. Zhang is engaged in faculty development initiatives, including serving on the New England Network on Faculty Affairs (NENFA) Steering Committee and the Nominating Committee of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE).
