Dr. Andrew J. Goodwin IV, M.D., is a Professor and Interim Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and the University of Vermont Health. He has held numerous leadership roles, including Vice Chair of Quality and Clinical Affairs, Division Chief for Laboratory Medicine, Medical Director for the Coagulation Laboratory, and Director for Faculty Recruitment and Retention. As an American Board of Pathology board-certified pathologist in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Dr. Goodwin specializes in laboratory thrombosis and hemostasis and previously served as a surgical pathologist subspecializing in breast and cervical disease, an attending pathologist for transfusion medicine, and CLIA Laboratory Medical Director across multiple institutions in Vermont, northern New York, and New Hampshire.
Nationally recognized for his contributions to laboratory quality and laboratory accreditation, Dr. Goodwin has served on many committees for the College of American Pathologists, where he now serves on the Council for Scientific Affairs. His publications span a broad scope but are now focused on quality laboratory testing for thrombotic and hemostatic disease. He is a dedicated educator, having received multiple teaching awards and mentored numerous trainees and faculty. In 2014, he created the Laboratory Management Course Curriculum focused on educating pathology residents on the operational, regulatory, professional, risk management, and complex laboratory systems that practicing pathologist oversee; this curriculum delivers education through both expert didactic presentations and hands-on experience for PGY-3 trainees as they serve as Assistant Medical Directors in the department.
Dr. Goodwin is committed to advancing patient care through innovation, collaboration, and service. As the current Interim Chair, he is focused on supporting pathology faculty colleagues across the department and championing leadership for numerous strategic endeavors, including digital anatomic pathology with integrated AI technologies, laboratory stewardship starting with genomic medicine testing, creative and philanthropic funding opportunities to support innovative research and education, and further improving the upon our mission of quality clinical care, effective education, and well-funded, innovative research to benefiting diagnostic and therapeutic patient care.
