BIO

Dr. Amer K. Abu Alfa is an Associate Professor in the Clinical Scholar Pathway at the Larner College of Medicine's Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Vermont. He serves as the Section Medical Director of Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology. Previously, he held significant leadership roles, including Division Chief of Surgical Pathology. Dr. Abu Alfa is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, with a professional focus on gastrointestinal and liver pathology, pancreatobiliary neoplasms, and quality improvement initiatives. He completed his fellowship in Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology at Yale University and his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Chicago. He is a graduate of the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Abu Alfa is nationally recognized for his expertise in gastrointestinal and liver pathology and has made significant contributions to various national organizations and committees. He has served as Chair of the Vermont Delegation to the College of American Pathologists (CAP) House of Delegates and has participated in the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology. His scholarly publications focus on gastrointestinal and liver pathology, pancreatobiliary neoplasms, and quality enhancement in medical practice. As a dedicated educator, Dr. Abu Alfa has received several teaching awards and nominations and has developed comprehensive curricula for medical students, residents, and fellows. His commitment to both pathology and patient care is evident in his leadership of high-volume diagnostic services, his dedication to quality initiatives, and his active participation in multidisciplinary tumor boards.

As the Section Medical Director of Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology, Dr. Abu Alfa is focused on promoting high-quality diagnostic care throughout the UVM Health Network. His initiatives include enhancing subspecialty pathology services, leading quality improvement projects, and integrating innovative technologies. His work reflects a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and excellence in clinical care, research support, and medical education.
