BIO

Agnes Balla, MD MHS, is an Attending Pathologist and Assistant Professor at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. She serves as the surgical pathology rotation director for the University of Vermont Medical Center Pathology Residency program and is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. She completed a fellowship in general surgical pathology and an additional year of breast pathology training at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Her primary clinical practice areas include Breast and Genitourinary pathology, and her research interests include cancer epidemiology and medical education. She has a passion for teaching and education at all levels.


Dr. Balla served as the Vermont Representative to the United States and Canadian Pathologists (USCAP) from 2020-2024, promoting educational and research initiatives. She is an active member of the national UMEDS committee, exchanging ideas to enhance undergraduate medical education in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She participated for several years in the College of American Pathologists (CAP) House of Delegates and Leadership Summit, advocating for pathology on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.


Dr. Balla’s teaching activities span a broad range of learners, including medical students, residents, medical technologists, pathologist assistants, and clinical colleagues. In addition to daily teaching at the microscope, she serves as the surgical pathology rotation director, overseeing the education of 16 residents. At the Larner College of Medicine, Dr. Balla teaches Breast cancer pathology and clinical management and Prostate and Bladder cancer pathology. She was nominated for Foundations Medical Student Teaching Award and Silver Stethoscope Awards and has been nominated for the Pathology Resident Teaching award annually. In recognition of her many activities in curriculum development and direct teaching, she was inducted into the Teaching Academy at the University of Vermont in 2023 and nominated for the Teaching and Educational Excellence Award in the category of Innovation in Curriculum Development or Pedagogy. Dr. Balla’s publications focus on her education curriculum development, quality improvement initiatives and reporting on the interesting cases that she encounters in her daily practice. 


As a surgical pathologist, Dr. Balla is committed to patient care and rendering timely diagnoses that dictate appropriate clinical management. She makes it a priority to stay up to date on cancer care management in her sub-specialty fields to ensure that her diagnoses and reports reflect the information needed to provide the best possible care for patients. She believes that strong foundational education at the medical school level ensures that all future physicians advocate for cancer screening and can accurately interpret pathology reports that inform medical decision making.
Dr. Balla is excited about supporting the department’s move toward pathology slide digitization and ensuring that it is implemented in a way that supports the education of the next generation of pathologists.

Bio

Agnes Balla, MD MHS, is an Attending Pathologist and Assistant Professor at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont.
