BIO

Abiy B. Ambaye, MD, is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Vermont’s Larner College of Medicine and an Attending Pathologist at the University of Vermont Medical Center. He serves as Section Medical Director for Breast Pathology and Medical Director of the Histology and Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Laboratories, overseeing quality systems, method validations, and daily operations that support high reliability patient care. His clinical practice spans Breast Pathology, Cytopathology, Prognostic marker interpretations, Cervical Pathology, and Intraoperative Consultation.

Dr. Ambaye’s scholarly work focuses on breast prognostic and predictive markers, IHC assay development and validation, and quality assurance. He has led and collaborated on funded studies that evaluate diagnostic concordance between whole slide imaging and light microscopy, optimize PD L1 and hormone receptor testing, and investigate biomarkers in breast and pancreatic neoplasia. His publications include original research and multi institutional efforts addressing analytic validation of predictive markers and standardized cell line controls for IHC.

An educator and mentor across the undergraduate, medical, and GME continuum, Dr. Ambaye has directed UVM’s Introduction to Human Diseases course for many years and developed comprehensive IHC seminars for residents and fellows. He has received multiple teaching award nominations and contributes nationally through service to the College of American Pathologists (CAP)—including leadership roles in the CAP IHC Committee and House of Delegates—and internationally through educational outreach and capacity building in Ethiopia.
