Yesterday afternoon, the Vermont Labor Relations Board counted the votes cast in the election to determine whether AFT-Vermont will represent clerical, technical, and specialized employees at the University of Vermont. A majority of the votes cast were in favor of union representation.

This newly formed bargaining unit includes most full-time and regular part-time employees who provide administrative or clerical support or who are engaged in technical or specialized work such as Laboratory/Research Technicians and Student Services Specialists. A complete list of included position classifications can be found here. Represented employees cannot opt out from this bargaining unit.

UVM’s employees and its culture will continue to remain rooted in Our Common Ground principles of respect, integrity, innovation, openness, justice, and responsibility. The university is committed to upholding positive working relationships with and between all its employees regardless of representation. Over the coming weeks and months, the university will engage with AFT-Vermont to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement which will cover the terms and conditions of employment for this unit, and will include wages, benefits, schedules and other basic terms and conditions of employment.  Until such time as the parties come to an agreement, which could take a number of months, there will be no changes in existing wages, benefits, or other working conditions.
