UVM Limited English Proficiency Statement 

UVM will take reasonable steps to ensure that Limited English Proficiency individuals have meaningful access and an equal opportunity to participate in our services, activities, programs and other benefits, in accordance with UVM Equal Opportunity Policies.  The goal is to ensure meaningful communication with LEP members of the university community, including students, faculty, staff, and others having an association with UVM. 

Who is a Limited English Proficient (LEP) individual?

Individuals who do not speak English as their primary language and who have a limited ability to read, speak, write, or understand English can be limited English proficient, or “LEP.”

How can LEP individuals obtain interpreter and translation services? 

• Students with language access needs (verbal interpreters, document translation) may contact the UVM Office of International Education (OIE) at 1-802-656-4296. 
• UVM employees with language access needs may request services by contacting the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity at aaeo@uvm.edu. AAEO is able to facilitate and fund translation and interpretation services for the purposes of UVM employment. 
• Staff and faculty who require translation services to provide academic or other programming may also contact AAEO at aaeo@uvm.edu to learn about options for translation.  
• When translation for academic or other programs is required, OIR and AAEO are available to consult with individuals administering the program to determine how to secure appropriate translation services.

NOTE: UVM has a contract with Language Line, a video and phone-based interpreter service, and there are multiple other phone based interpreter services available. Contact OIR or AAEO for assistance in determining what services may be appropriate.
