BIO
Dr. Alyssa Tonks joined the Department of Nursing at the University of Vermont in October 2024 as a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor. She is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with a background in neuroscience, clinical care, and behavioral health. Before entering advanced practice, Dr. Tonks worked as a surgical registered nurse and in youth mental health crisis services. These experiences, combined with her academic foundation in neuroscience, continue to shape her holistic, patient-centered approach to clinical practice and nursing education.
Dr. Tonks holds a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from Westminster College (2016), a Master of Medical Science from the University of Vermont (2018), and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Vermont (2024).
In addition to her faculty role, Dr. Tonks practices at Appletree Bay Primary Care in Burlington, Vermont, where she provides comprehensive primary care to the local community. Her academic and clinical interests include neuroscience, neuropsychopharmacology, pharmacology, integrated mental and physical health, and preventive care. She teaches Advanced Neuropsychopharmacology and Advanced Pharmacology for APRN students, emphasizing the connection between foundational science, evidence-based prescribing, and clinical decision-making. Dr. Tonks is particularly committed to preparing future nurse practitioners through engaging, evidence-based education.
