Statement of Purpose

The statement of purpose is a critical component of the application. It serves as a writing sample, and the reviewers are looking for applicants to tell 'their story'. Take your time and include:

  • Influences/experiences that have led to the choice of a career in social work/human services work and for pursuing an MSW degree.
  • What has prepared you for undertaking graduate study in social work?
  • What are your future professional goals in relation to the program’s mission and philosophy.
  • If you have any gaps in your grades, or periods of time unaccounted for, please explain this in your statement of purpose. Things in life happen for all of us.
  • The statement need only be 2-3 pages, maximum.
  • We recommend you create your 'statement' as a Word document and upload it with your application to the UVM Graduate College.

Letters of Recommendation

  • Within the application you will provide email addresses for three recommenders. UVM will contact each directly by email and provide instructions on how to submit letters of recommendation directly through the UVM Graduate College application portal.
  • At least one recommender should be academic source, such as a current or former professor or academic advisor.
  • If an academic source is unavailable, due to length of time since graduation, a recommendation may come from a professional who has supervised your paid employment, volunteer work, or an internship in a human services agency or organization. This individual is encouraged to speak to your ability to do graduate-level coursework.
  • Tips for managing letters of recommendation: You do NOT have to waive your right to see your recommendation letters. It will not impact the strength of your application. We sometimes receive letters that are much too brief (perhaps a function of the online process). It helps to ask your recommender for a copy of the letter, and to follow up to ensure it was submitted online.

Please be aware that this part of the application can be the longest to assemble since you are dependent upon others.

Professional Resume

  • It is preferred but not required that an applicant have employment experience in human services.
  • Experience can include work in social service agencies, hospitals, schools, or any other human service setting. In some instances, significant staff responsibility as a continuous volunteer or as a supervised intern in such a setting provides this experience.
  • The resume should outline work and related human services work or volunteer work experiences.

General Academic Requirements

  • Completion of bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a recognized regional accrediting association.
  • No minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) is set for admission, however GPA is considered as an indicator of preparation for master's level work.
  • Evidence of a strong liberal arts background, including 18 credit hours of coursework in social sciences, behavior and life sciences, humanities, and psychology withan emphasis on human/social issues. In general, the applicant’s educational background and coursework should show adequate preparation to pursue graduatestudy in social work. Grades below a B- do not count in this evaluation.
  • The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is optional. However, the GRE is useful if you feel that other parts of your application may be weak and the GREs would strengthen your application and be an additional indicator of your ability to successfully complete a graduate program.
  • Prior work or volunteer experience in human services is preferred. Faculty view life experience and previous work experience as valuable and helpful to prospective students. Nevertheless, the MSW program does not waive its academic requirements, including field requirements, for these experiences.
  • For questions regarding international applications please email International Student Services or review the International Student Admissions webpage.

Advanced Standing Option

  • Advanced Standing status is an option only for those prospective students who have successfully completed a Bachelor’s of Social Work (BSW) degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) within 7 years of intended enrollment in the MSW program at UVM.
  • Students with advanced standing status pursue an accelerated course of study consisting of 39 credits completed over a summer, fall, and spring semester (one calendar year).
  • Applicants currently enrolled in BSW programs must plan to have all bachelors’ degree requirements completed by late May, prior to beginning MSW studies at UVM on the advanced standing track.
  • Application requirements are the same for advanced standing applicants with the addition of a field practicum evaluation or a letter of support from the Director of Field Education. This letter should be uploaded with your application and sent to the Graduate College.
  • Accepted Advanced Standing students attend a mandatory orientation session in March and begin MSW studies in May.
