With funding through the generosity of the Sidney E. Frank Foundation, the Literacy Hub is completing year one of a two-year strategic visioning and implementation plan for preparing educators, deepening collaborative partnerships, and disseminating scholarship at the state and national level. Membership and participation are inclusive across faculty and staff involved in educator preparation in literacy.
Over the past year, we identified a shared vision for birth-grade 6 literacy educator preparation, completed a landscape analysis of current UVM coursework in relation to literacy standards, engaged in shared professional learning, and conducted relevant research.
Several members of the Literacy Hub are engaged in research that seeks to understand the literacy curriculum and practices in Vermont K-6 classrooms. The research also aims to better understand partnership schools' approaches to literacy instruction and how to co-construct mutually beneficial partnerships with the UVM Department of Education.
Our research findings will be used to inform continuous improvement of the educator preparation curriculum, generate new knowledge on university-school partnerships, and improve learning experiences for PreK-21 students.
Literacy Hub Core Values
Literacy is an essential human right.
We recognize the role of literacy curriculum, instruction, and assessment in creating inclusive learning environments and advancing equitable outcomes.
We prepare future and current educators to:
- Use evidence-based literacy practices to support all students.
- Critically consume research and engage in data-based decision-making.
- Assume responsibility for building collective efficacy, sharing of expertise, and advocacy for strong literacy outcomes.
