Adriana Story 10/26

Adriana Sanchez-Gutierrez took Vermont by storm, when she arrived here in 2023.  Already possessing a deep understanding of community partnerships, she pioneered new programs for Spanish-language learners at UVM.  From the beginning, she taught every Spanish course with a service-learning component, whether students were working on “Hispanic Tales” – a program where UVM students research and develop curricula reflecting indigenous tales to integrate into the Spanish curriculum of middle schools throughout Chittenden and Addison County – or “Hispanic Voices” – where students interviewed Spanish speakers in Vermont for spots on Vermont Public.  On the basis of this creativity and commitment, Adriana earned CELO’s Outstanding New Community-Engaged Learning Faculty Member Award in the spring of 2026.  Now Adriana’s students are creating podcasts that will be featured on Hispanic Worlds from Vermont, a Spanish-language radio talk show hosted by DJ Adru (Adriana herself).  Students are integrating their language learning with contemporary culture, music and issues of identity in Vermont.  Hispanic Voices launched on September 20th, 2026.
