Awards and Showcase

Each year, CELO honors faculty and community partners for their work in community-engaged learning through a formal awards ceremony. The awards are coupled with an annual showcase, where nominated students exhibit work done in community-engaged learning courses.

Award Criteria

Outstanding Faculty Awards

Body

There are two faculty awards recognizing the outstanding use of community-engaged learning pedagogy in UVM courses:

  • the Lynne Bond Outstanding Service-Learning Faculty Award; or
  • the Outstanding New Community-Engaged Learning Faculty Award.

“New” faculty have generally been teaching community-engaged courses for less than 5 years at UVM, but nominated faculty can be considered for either award as appropriate.

Criteria: Any instructor (of any rank) teaching a designated service learning (SL) or civic learning (CL) course at UVM may be nominated for a CELO Faculty Award. The review committee will consider the following in reviewing the nomination letters and supporting materials:

  • Effective collaboration with community partners in developing mutually beneficial projects or service
  • Successful integration of the experiential component so that it fulfills academic learning goals
  • Effective use of assignments that enable students to prepare for and learn from the service component (e.g. critical reflection)
  • Commitment to recognizing diverse perspectives as necessary to effective community engagement
  • Demonstrated commitment to community-engaged teaching and learning
  • Demonstrated commitment to UVM's Our Common Ground and land grant mission
