TypeWell is a real-time speech-to-text transcription system designed to provide accessibility for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. It allows transcribers to capture spoken content using a specialized abbreviation system, which is then converted into clear, real-time text for users to read on a computer, tablet, or other device. Unlike verbatim captioning, TypeWell provides meaning-for-meaning transcription, focusing on conveying the essential content while maintaining readability and comprehension.
For Faculty
What is TypeWell?
The TypeWell Transcriber is a professional who has been hired by Student Accessibility Services (SAS) and creates a meaning-to-meaning transcript of all content covered in class.
TypeWell is not a substitute for Captioning as students are unable to watch a video and read a transcript at the same time. To request Captioning Services, please refer to Captioning.
How does TypeWell work?
The transcriber connects remotely with the eligible student via Skype and a universal USB Microphone and creates a typed transcript of all content covered in class. Students eligible for this accommodation will need access to a laptop/tablet during class.
