Academic skills workshops are designed to help students develop effective techniques and strategies for learning, studying, and succeeding in their academic pursuits. These workshops are ideal for students looking to refine their academic skills, overcome challenges, and achieve greater success in their studies. Registration is required for all events.

Tutoring Center Informational Presentation

Body

This presentation introduces undergraduate students to the University of Vermont (UVM) Tutoring Center. It highlights key services such as subject area tutoring, supplemental instruction, and study skills development. The presentation also provides practical information on scheduling appointments and engaging with peer educators.

The "Navigating Your Course Syllabus" workshop equips students with practical strategies to maximize the use of their course syllabi as a foundational tool for academic success. Participants will learn ways to utilize their syllabus. Students will identify critical information such as key dates, academic policies, and available resources through an interactive syllabus scavenger hunt. This workshop is an engaging way to help students take charge of their learning, stay organized, and understand course expectations. It is perfect for integration into courses to set students up for success.

Time Management Workshop

Body

The Time Management Workshop breaks down how to manage your time into three parts: 1) What to consider before you plan, 2) Planning strategies and tools, and 3) Understanding procrastination and motivation. By the end of the workshop, students will have the skills they need to take control of their schedule and avoid common time management errors that lead to stress, anxiety, and cramming before exams.

Note-taking Strategies Workshop

Body

The Note-Taking Strategies Workshop teaches students about the relationship between active learning and note-taking before introducing five different note-taking methods. Each of the note-taking methods is geared towards specific academic disciplines, and students have the option of creating their own template or downloading templates provided by the Tutoring Center. After completing this workshop, students will understand how to prepare to take notes, how to choose and use a note-taking method, and tips to help identify important parts of a lecture.

Study Skills Workshops

The Study Strategies Workshop introduces students to six evidence-based study strategies endorsed by cognitive scientists to boost learning. In this workshop, students will learn how to apply these strategies to their own study routine. Each strategy will be explored equipping participants with actionable techniques for academic success.

Test-Taking Strategies Workshop

Body

The Test-Taking Strategies & Managing Test Anxiety Workshop is designed to equip participants with practical tools and techniques to prepare effectively, stay calm during tests, and reflect on your performance. This session will cover essential topics like developing a study plan, applying Bloom's Taxonomy for deeper understanding, and handling different types of test questions. We'll also explore mindfulness exercises to manage anxiety and maintain focus. At the end of this session, participants will walk away with actionable strategies to boost their confidence and success in exam settings!
