General Information
Who can utilize tutoring services?
Tutoring services are primarily offered to undergraduate students enrolled in introductory level undergraduate courses. PACE and graduate students are also welcome to use our services if they would like to book a study skills appointment or are enrolled in an undergraduate course that already has an established tutor. Individuals unaffiliated with the University of Vermont are unable to access tutoring services.
What is Supplemental Instruction?
Supplemental Instruction, often abbreviated as SI, is a peer-run study system that revolves around facilitated group review. It is a program that works with historically challenging courses, and it is a great way to both learn new material and review course content. SI has proven to contribute to higher grades for those who attend. Supplemental Instruction Schedule
When is the Tutoring Center open?
Our Center is open for appointments Monday through Thursday from 8:45 am – 6:15 pm, and on Friday from 8:45 am – 4:15 pm. Tutoring begins during the third week of classes each fall semester, and the second week of classes for the spring. The Tutoring Center is not open during administrative closures and does not offer any tutoring appointments during the week of finals period. If you are looking for support during finals period, please consult the Supplemental Instruction schedule to review if your course is serviced by this program.
How much does tutoring cost?
Tutoring is free of charge to students currently enrolled at UVM.
Scheduling
How do I book an appointment?
Students can book appointments using Navigate, which can be accessed both online and through a mobile app. Students can also schedule appointments by completing our tutor inquiry form, by emailing tutoring@uvm.edu, or by stopping by our center’s front desk at 244 Living/Learning Commons.
How often can I meet with a tutor?
One-on-one tutoring is limited to one tutoring session per week for each course a student is enrolled in. However, there is no limit on the number of group appointments or Supplemental Instruction sessions you can attend.
Can I cancel an appointment I’ve already scheduled?
The Tutoring Center has an 18-hour cancellation policy. This policy is in place to respect the time of our tutors, as well as to ensure that appointment slots are available to other students who may need them. Students can cancel appointments directly through Navigate, by calling (802) 656-4075, or emailing tutoring@uvm.edu.
If you cancel appointments with less than 18 hours' notice more than three times within a 45-day period, Navigate will automatically restrict your ability to book appointments. To lift this restriction students are required to meet with a professional staff member.
What courses have Peer Tutors available?
Our center hires peer tutors for courses that demonstrate a clear need for academic support and has historically seen high student demand. To confirm if our center has any peer tutors on staff for a course you are enrolled in, please review the appointment scheduler within Navigate.
What should I do if I do not see my course listed in the Navigate appointment scheduler?
There are various reasons that you may not find any available appointments in Navigate, such as a lack of mutual availability, or a lack of peer tutors who work with your course. If you do not see any available appointments in Navigate, we recommend that you complete our tutor inquiry form. After completing the form, our center will email you within 0-3 business days to either connect you with a tutor who can meet with you or inform you that we do not have any tutors on staff for your course.
If we do not have a tutor on staff for your course, our center will begin to track the demand for tutoring from other students. If there is a demonstrated collective demand for tutoring, our team will then begin the process of recruiting a tutor, and will message you once one has been hired.
Appointments
How should I prepare for a tutoring session?
To get the most out of a tutoring session, it is expected that you will come prepared. To prepare, we advise that you review course content before your session and arrive at your appointment with specific questions and goals. In addition to this, it is important to review our center’s policies for accessing appointments, and to bring all relevant materials, such as notes, textbooks, and a charged computer.
Can tutors work on graded assignments?
No, students cannot work on graded assignments with a tutor. In lieu of working on graded assignments, you are encouraged to come prepared with questions, concepts, and practice problems.
What should I expect during a tutoring session?
You can expect to discuss course topics, ideas, methodologies, and problem-solving steps. Our peer tutors are also able to guide you through specific questions about course content and provide you with independent learning strategies.
What should I NOT expect during a tutoring session?
Although our tutors are highly competent, you should not expect them to be your only academic support, or have the ability to answer every question you might have. They may be unable to provide the same level of detail or insight as professors or TAs, especially in courses with multiple sections. Therefore, it’s crucial to regularly consult faculty and attend office hours alongside using tutoring services.
How are tutors selected for a course?
All our peer tutors are fellow undergraduate students, each of whom has excelled in their course work at UVM and done particularly well in each class they tutor for. Every tutor goes through a comprehensive hiring process where we review their grades and interpersonal skills, and meet with them for an interview. After being hired, every tutor completes a training series and receives a recommendation from their professor for each course they wish to work with.
How can I apply to become a peer tutor?
If you are interested in applying to become a peer tutor, our center highly encourages you to review the employment opportunities section of our website.
