Each year, the Tutoring Center employs over 200 undergraduate students across a wide range of positions.

The Tutoring Center firmly believes in empowering students to succeed, something made possible through the many undergraduate students who work with our center. From front desk staff to peer educators, our undergraduate employees make use of their experience and expertise to support the academic journeys of their fellow students.

Front Desk Student Assistants

Body

Front Desk Student Assistants are situated in the lobby of the Tutoring Center in 244 Living and Learning Commons. Assistants greet all visitors (students, faculty, staff, guests) to the Tutoring Center and quickly assess what services best meet their needs. Front desk team members answer the telephone, manage emails, schedule appointments, and assist with other administrative responsibilities. In addition, Front Desk Student Assistants maintain a welcoming, inclusive and professional office.

Qualifications:

Must have a positive attitude and willingness to help peers. Some public/customer service experience is desirable. Candidates should have availability for shifts within the Tutoring Center's open hours: Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-7:30pm, Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm and Sunday, 2:00-5:30 pm. Schedules are arranged based on student availability.

This position is available only to students with Federal Work Study funds.

Compensation:

$13.75 per hour starting rate; raises available with experience.

Subject Area Tutor

Job Description:

Subject Area Tutors work independently in either individual or small group-based sessions, supporting students to successfully navigate course-specific content or apply effective learning strategies. This is a student-friendly, on-campus position with no prior tutoring or work experience required. All training is paid, and we work with your class schedule and external commitments to determine your work hours. This position is eligible for work-study, though we also hire non-work study students.

Tutoring sessions are typically 45 minutes in length, with tutors paid for the full hour to allow time for documenting the session. Tutors are expected to be available at a recurring time each week, with students being able to book these times directly though Navigate. Tutors must have at least one hour of recurring availability per week and are expected to work no more than 10 hours each week, though these hours are flexible. Hours are often split between scheduled time, and more variable appointments made by student request. 

Our center hires subject area tutors on a rolling basis, so interested candidates are encouraged to apply at any time!

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student.
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Final grade of B+ or better in each class a student chooses to serve as a tutor for. Barring limited exceptions, transfer credits are generally not accepted.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Highly Dependable, punctual, and responsive.
  • Commitment to helping other students learn.
  • Commitment to creating a welcoming and positive environment, as well as a sensitivity to student diversity and belonging.
  • Commitment to the application of effective learning & study strategies.
  • Ability to solicit faculty recommendation for all courses chosen to work with. Recommendations are gathered after a student has been hired for the position as part of the onboarding process.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining a 3.0 GPA.
  • Facilitating either individual or small group-based tutoring appointments.
  • Being available for a minimum of 1 hour of appointment availability each week during the semester, excluding breaks, holidays, and finals period.
  • Completion of paid training sessions.
  • Documenting all tutoring sessions in a timely manner.
  • Logging hours promptly and accurately in UVM’s payroll system each pay period.
  • Abiding by the Federal Education Records Protection Act, Title IX, as well as the University of Vermont's Academic Code of Integrity Policy and other relevant student employment policies. 
     

Other Responsibilities:

  • Being responsive to supervisor and student communications.
  • Creating a welcoming and inclusive learning environment.
  • Modeling outstanding student behavior and successful academic practices.
  • Performing miscellaneous duties as needed or directed.

Compensation:

$14.15 per hour; with raises occurring at the beginning of each academic year you remain employed as a subject area tutor.

Overview of Hiring Timeline:

Our center hires subject area tutors on a rolling basis, as positions become available. In general, you should allow upwards of two to three weeks for your application to be reviewed. In the event you are selected for an interview, a staff member will contact you with a request to meet for a 30-minute interview. During an interview, a staff member is able to provide additional details about the hiring process and answer any questions you might have. 

Study Skills Tutor

Job Description:

Study Skills Tutors are accomplished students from various majors who support their peers in developing effective academic strategies. As a tutor, you'll guide fellow students in areas like time management, note-taking, reading techniques, study systems, and test-taking strategies. Not only will you help others succeed, but you’ll also gain valuable experience and training in tutoring, teaching, and learning.

This training is a great opportunity if you are looking for tangible ways to best support tutees with the “HOW” of doing academically well. Additionally, as a Study Skills Tutor, you'll have the opportunity to work with students one-on-one and in small groups.

Key details about the position:

  • Weekly commitment: 3-5 hours
  • Hourly wage: $14.15 (with raises available for experience)

Study Skills Tutors should:

  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Commit to helping other students learn
  • Model effective learning and study strategies
  • Be responsive and possess strong communication skills
  • Obtain a faculty or staff recommendation (info provided during the interview)
  • Successfully complete the required training

Training requirements:

  • 8 –10 hours of asynchronous training over winter break
  • Weekly 1-hour meetings during the Spring semester

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader

Body

Job Description:

Supplemental Instruction is a program instituted at universities nationally and internationally. SI is offered in classes that have high rates of enrollment and high rates of D's, F's, or withdrawals, predominantly in the sciences and social sciences.

The program assists students by offering opportunities for an increased level of engagement with course material. SI leaders attend lectures and take notes along with students, then prepare two, hour-long review sessions each week that focus on key skills and concepts presented. SI leaders incorporate valuable study skills, techniques, and strategies within practical applications of the course material.

Leading Supplemental Instruction requires a time commitment of 10 hours/week. SI leaders are expected to:

  • Attend regular meetings and trainings (pre-semester and during)
  • Attend all class meetings of selected course
  • Act as a model student
  • Schedule and conduct two, 50-minute study sessions each week
  • Hold 1 office hour each week
  • Prepare materials and plan each session
  • Make in-class announcements and distribute surveys, as needed
  • Facilitate student attendance sign-ins
  • Maintain close contact with students, professors, and supervisors

Qualifications:

Supplemental Instruction leaders work within the peer-tutoring model embraced by the Tutoring Center. As students, they have taken the course for which they are leading SI (or an appropriate equivalent) and received a minimum grade of a B+. In addition, each leader must receive a recommendation by faculty in the department, ensuring their knowledge of the material. 

Compensation:

$14.65 per hour to start; with raises available with experience.

Academic Support Programs Assistant

Body

This position's main function is to help the Supplemental Instruction (SI) supervisor manage the SI Program at UVM. A secondary function of this position is to support Tutoring Center programming.

Responsibilities:

Supplemental Instruction

  • Assist coordinator with day-to-day functions of the SI program
  • Observe SI Sessions and provide constructive feedback to improve SI Leader performance
  • Track and maintain SI program data and assist with reports as requested
  • Plan and facilitate weekly group meetings for SI Leaders
  • Assist in planning and facilitating trainings based on the UMKC SI Model
  • Track SI Leader attendance and other records
  • Assist in the development, tracking, and analysis of program surveys
  • Develop and update materials, handouts, and employee documents
  • Assist with the promotion of SI, including making announcements, promotional materials, and creation of additional strategies
  • Support SI Leaders in the planning of SI sessions and use of a wide variety of the identified learning strategies

Tutoring Center

  • Facilitate academic workshops
  • Provide assistance with Tutoring Center communications and marketing strategies
  • Assist with data entry and analysis

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Education or Psychology Sciences background with an emphasis on Learning Theory
  • Flexible, minimum 5 hours of availability, starting August 19, 2024
  • Have the flexibility to work some evening and weekend hours

Preferred Qualifications

  • Able to commit to a full year of work
  • Currently enrolled in MA or certificate program at UVM as of Fall 2024
  • Interest and/or experience in higher education and student personnel services
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft applications
  • Familiar with Drupal, Navigate, Canva, and Learning Management Systems
  • Interest in facilitating presentations and/or workshops
  • Thorough and detail-oriented
  • Strong writing, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and follow directions
  • Preference given to those enrolled in one of the following CESS or Psychology programs:
    • Curriculum and Instruction
    • Educational Technology
    • Disability Studies
    • Education
    • MAT
    • Reading and Literacy
    • Special Education
    • Psychological Science with an emphasis in Learning Theory

Number of Positions Available: 1 – 2 positions

Weekly Commitment: 10 – 20 Hours per week

Compensation: $18.00-$21.00 per hour, commensurate with experience
