Grades and GPA Calculation

Grades and their Quality Point Values
A+ ... 4.00 B+ ... 3.33 C+ ... 2.33 D+ ... 1.33 F ... 0.00
A ... 4.00 B ... 3.00 C ... 2.00 D ... 1.00
A- ... 3.67 B- ... 2.67 C- ... 1.67 D- ... 0.67

This system began with grades received for courses initiated in the fall semester 1983. Grades received prior to the fall 1983 semester with "+" or "-" receive only those quality points shown on page 42 of the 1982-83 catalogue.

Other grades are:
S/U Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. This grade may be used to evaluate a student's performance in courses where the A-F grade is inappropriate, such as in seminars, internships, practica, etc. The grade will appear on the transcript, but will not be used in grade-point computation. The student will receive the appropriate credit hours toward graduation for the S grade, but not for the U grade. Courses which use this grading system are so indicated in the catalogue description. The S/U is available on a whole course basis (and only on a whole course basis) and is available for courses that count towards degree requirements.

AU Audit. A student wishing to audit a credit course must meet minimum levels of performance set by the instructor at the time of registration in order to receive an audit grade on a transcript. No grade credit is given for the work.

I Incomplete. This grade applies to course work which is not completed due to circumstances beyond the student's control.

XC Extended Course. This grade is awarded at the end of the semester to a student who is enrolled in an identified course, the nature of which makes it unreasonable or impossible for the student to complete the required work within the regular semester.

NP Not Passed, not used in grade-point average computation.

P Passed, not used in grade-point average computation.

W Withdrawn.

M Missing. Grade not turned in by the instructor.

XF Failure resulting from academic dishonesty. This grade is equivalent to the grade of F in the determination of grade-point averages and academic standing.

How Grades are Processed

Grades are loaded nightly as they are received from the instructors. When the bulk of the grades are received, M's are loaded to grades which are still outstanding. These M's are changed to the actual grade when the instructor finally submits the grades to the Registrar's Office. Do not be concerned if all your grades do not display immediately, or if the credits displaying do not equal the number of credits for which you are registered. Because grades come in over a two week period, it is very likely you will see grades in some of your courses, but not all of them. The total credits displaying is the total graded credits, not the total registered credits. These are not errors. They simply indicate all grades have not yet been processed. If you were 'truly' missing a grade, you would have a grade of 'M' in that course. If the grade simply does not appear, it means grade processing is not yet complete.

How to Calculate a GPA

A grade point average is the total quality points divided by the total credit hours. Note the example:

Grades Credit Hours Quality Points
 A 3 4.00
 A- 4 3.67
 B+ 3 3.33
 C 2 2.00
To get the total quality points, multiply the quality points for each grade by the number of credits for the grade:
 A 3 x 4.00 = 12.00
 A- 4 x 3.67 = 14.68
 B+ 3 x 3.33 = 9.99
 C 2 x 2.00 = 4.00
    --- -----
sum 12 gpa hrs 40.67 points 40.67 points/12 gpa hrs = 3.38 gpa
If a course is repeated, there is a 'repeat indicator' next to it with a value of 'I' or 'A'. Regardless of the repeat indicator value, the grade is included in the gpa calculation. In the example above, if the course with the A- was a repeated course, the gpa would still be 3.38.

The repeat indicator tells whether or not the course credits will count toward the hours earned for the degree. Hours earned is a separate field from gpa hours.

I = credits are included in hours earned
A = credits are not included in hours earned

In the example above, if the repeat indicator for the course with the A- is 'I', hours earned = 12 and gpa hours = 12. If the repeat indicator is 'A', hours earned = 8 and gpa hours = 12.
