"The Hanford Advisory Board: participatory democracy, technology, and representation"

In a recent research article, Alex Zakaras and his co-author Alex Sager evaluate the Hanford Advisory Board, which is a small group of citizen volunteers who exercise formal oversight over the cleanup at the Hanford nuclear site in Eastern Washington state. Zakaras and Sager find that the Hanford Advisory Board serves an important democratic function, both in helping publicize the government's failures and oversights and in helping government regulators understand and adjust to the needs of local citizens.  “The Hanford Advisory Board: Participatory Democracy, Technology, and Representation.”  Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences 4:142-155.
