[RFH] RF Hardware

Radios – the wireless interface

Summary:  Overview of analog RF functions and system components, including the RF block diagram, modulation basics, up/down conversion, amplifiers, oscillators and synthesizers, filters and antennas. System issues such as chip-level radios, power, integration, and packaging are discussed.
Examples: TI CC1100 and Analog Devices ADF7020 single-chip transceivers

Objectives:

  • Understand the critical performance requirements of each component in the RF block diagram. Links to communications systems analysis.
  • Understand the key design and technology challenges for each component in the RF block diagram.
  • Be able to describe implications on the radio hardware design due to various types of scaling, e.g. size, frequency, cost, power, data rate. Links to wireless network design.
