Advising

Either drop in at regularly scheduled office hours (email jeanne.shea@uvm.edu or call 656-3884 for this semester’s schedule) or make an appointment if you can’t make those times. If you know ahead of time that you plan to drop in, you may also want to email the professor so that s/he knows to expect you and what sorts of issues you would like to discuss. To make the most of your meeting time, make sure to bring all of the information and materials needed so that we can tackle the issue (e.g., list of courses you have taken and plan to take and how they line up with general, distributive, major, and minor requirements; a copy of a quiz or paper or presentation on which you had difficulty and questions on how you could improve; ideas and questions about your academic plans, study abroad, internships, or career possibilities; list of difficulties you are having with academics or college life for us to brainstorm about together; etc.).

Tips on Letters of Recommendation:

Make request at least two weeks in advance. Provide all needed information, such as: description of the position/program/scholarship to which you are applying, full name and contact information of person and organization to which you are applying, your statement of intent and your relevant qualifications, copy of your academic transcript, an updated resume, any additional materials which may help your recommender evaluate your qualifications (e.g., an example of your written work), instructions for writing and sending the letter (evaluation criteria, forms, etc.), and the deadline. Include an addressed envelope or instructions for faxing or emailing the recommendation.
