Asian Studies is an
interdisciplinary program composed of twenty-four faculty
members in thirteen academic disciplines -- Art History, Anthropology,
Chinese
Language, Community Development, Economics, Education,
Environmental Studies, History, Linguistics, Japanese Language,
Philosophy, Political
Science, and Religion. The
Asian Studies faculty is
noted for excellence in both
teaching and scholarship.
Major and minor academic concentrations in Asian Studies are available to undergraduate students. Several departments offer graduate programs as well. Students wishing to major in Asian Studies take a foreign language relevant to their particular concentration through the intermediate level, and take courses on Asia in at least three disciplines other than language.
Asian Studies faculty cooperate with student organizations, such as the Asian Cultural Exchange and the Asian American Student Union, to bring to campus intellectual and cultural events related to Asia, including speakers, films, music and dance performances, art exhibits, and culinary demonstrations. Check out Kazuko Carlson's blog about her cultural exchange trip to Japan in the summer of 2007!

Asian Studies Outreach Program
An important feature of the Asian Studies Program is outreach to
communities and to schools at all levels throughout Vermont. A variety
of outreach activities, designed to enhance learning about Asia, draw
on the knowledge and talents of the Asian Studies faculty, and on the
first-hand experience of dozens
of Asian nationals who are working and studying at the University of
Vermont campus.
