On March 23, 2004 I attended a student intern
seminar at Orchard Elementary School. (PC 4a) This meeting provided
the student interns with an overview of the special education laws and
how they have been enacted at Orchard School. This meeting allowed
us to ask questions and learn more about the special education system in
many schools. |

This is the first step at Orchard School in most childrens case.
This is the system that some children in my classroom are in right now.
This system allows children to get some special needs taken care off, whether
it be a special plan to control behavior, or moving a child to another
grade to meet that child's needs. |
Some children will have 504 plans in a school. An example of
this can be seen in the plan to the right. This plan is designed
for students with no adverse affects, but needs special instruction or
has a disability. An example of this could be like the child to the
right or a child with diabetes. A child with diabetes may have a
plan that would allow them to have food in the room, an aide with them,
the right to leave the room at anytime if they are feeling low, or they
may be exempt from doing things if diabetes gets in the way. A 504
plan is guaranteed to anyone who needs it if they don't qualify for special
education. |

These are my notes from the meeting. We had a lot of handouts
so I didn't write too much. On it I listed the three gates one must
pass to recieve special education. The first is they must have a
disability, the second is that is must be having an adverse affect on their
learning, and third is that they must need special instruction. If
a child passes these gates then the child is guaranteed by law the right
to have an IEP and special services given to them. |
These different system that have been set up allows every
child at Orchard Elementary School to get a fair and equitable education
and will allow them to excell at school. (pc 3a Every Child a Learner)
Becoming
aware of the systems set up in my future school is important so that I
can make sure that each child gets the most out of school.
In my future I plan on getting to know the special education system
in place so that I can help make sure that every child is a learner.
Each child has the ability to learn, some just learn a little different.
It will be my job to put any child who needs it through the system so that
they can be their best. |
