We are proud of the tradition of writing center research and scholarship at UVM, which has taken the form of articles, reports, and conference presentations. Research enables us to adapt to changing needs, improve practices and pedagogy, and contribute to conversations in writing studies and writing centers.

Spring 2025 - A Changing Landscape: Generative AI in Undergraduate Writing

In Spring 2025, our service-learning writing tutors worked in groups to investigate the impact of genAI in undergraduate writing by focusing on the experiences of faculty, undergraduate students, and writing tutors and by reviewing existing literature about genAI in education more broadly and on writing centers more specifically. Each of these five research groups contributed findings and recommendations to a comprehensive report, A Changing Landscape: Generative AI in Undergraduate Writing (pdf).

Spring 2026 - Writing Center Decisions

In Spring 2026, undergraduate service-learning writing tutors in ENGL 2795, Exploring Writing Centers, investigated the educational decisions students make about using the Undergraduate Writing Center—or not. Working in research groups, they reviewed writing center scholarship, surveyed and interviewed UVM students, analyzed faculty communication about writing support, and examined how the Writing Center promotes its services. Their findings and recommendations are collected in the comprehensive report, Writing Center Decisions (pdf).
