Vermont Research Open Source Program Office (VERSO)
Funders now expect open data and code - are you ready? Join VERSO for Open Science 101, a free workshop built on NASA's TOPS curriculum covering open data, code, and results. Sept 18, 1–4pm, Innovation e100. In person only, 40 seats, first come first serve. Coffee and snacks provided.

What is Open Science 101?

Open Science 101 is a curriculum originally developed by NASA's Transform to Open Science initiative to train researchers in the principles and day-to-day practices of open, transparent, and reproducible research. VERSO has adapted the course for the UVM community. Open science isn't just a philosophy — it's increasingly a requirement. Federal funders including NSF and NIH now expect data management and sharing plans, public access to results, and reproducible methods. This training gives you the working knowledge to meet those expectations and get more visibility and reuse out of your own work.

What You'll Learn

The workshop walks through the five core modules of the Open Science 101 curriculum:

  • The Ethos of Open Science — what open science is, why it matters, and how to weigh openness against legitimate constraints like privacy, licensing, and sensitive data
  • Open Tools and Resources — the platforms and infrastructure of open research, from repositories and persistent identifiers (ORCID, DOIs) to collaborative tools like GitHub
  • Open Data — how to make your data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR), including data management plans, metadata, and choosing a repository
  • Open Code — sharing analysis code and software so others can verify and build on your work, including licensing and version control basics
  • Open Results — open access publishing, preprints, and how to share findings so they reach beyond the paywall

You'll leave with concrete next steps you can apply to your current project — whether that's writing your first data management plan, putting code on GitHub, or picking the right license.

About the Event

On Friday, September 18 from 1:00–4:00pm, VERSO is hosting a free, in-person Open Science 101 training in the Innovation Hall e100 conference room. This three-hour workshop condenses NASA's Transform to Open Science (TOPS) curriculum into a practical, hands-on session for anyone at UVM who produces, manages, or publishes research.

Space is limited to 40 participants, first come, first served. REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED. Coffee and snacks provided.

Who Should Attend?

Faculty, research staff, postdocs, and graduate and undergraduate students, no prior experience with open science required. If you write grants, manage data, publish, or code, this session is for you
