    Writing matters

UVM's three university-wide writing initiatives share a collective mission to support writers and teachers of writers at all levels.

Supporting student writers and faculty across campus through all stages of writing.

UVM's three university-wide writing initiatives (Foundational Writing and Information Literacy (FWIL), the UVM Writing Centers, and the Writing in the Disciplines (WID) program) share a collective mission is to support writers and teachers of writers through varied offerings.

In creating and sustaining a vibrant culture of writing at UVM, these initiatives support students’ intellectual experiences on campus and both deepen and broaden faculty understandings of writing:

Foundational Writing and Information Literacy

This required course and principle of study promotes the values and practices of information literacy, of critical reading, and of theoretically-grounded approaches to writing and revision. Foundational Writing and Information Literacy (FWIL)

The UVM Writing Centers

The UVM Writing Centers offer free writing support to undergraduate students through the Undergraduate Writing Center and graduate students through the Graduate Writing Center. The undergraduate tutors and graduate writing consultants do not correct papers for students or write comments on drafts. Instead, they engage writers in conversation and activities to help them move forward with writing. UVM Writing Centers

Writing in the Disciplines

The Writing in the Disciplines Program works with departments and faculty across campus in order to make writing a significant part of undergraduate students' education beyond the first-year experience. Writing in the Disciplines (WID) program
