Wubet Jean‑Baptiste has been named recipient of the 2026 Mary Jean Simpson Award, recognizing her exceptional leadership, commitment to intercultural community building, and lasting impact on the University of Vermont community.

An English major with double minors in public communication and art in the College of Arts and Sciences, Jean‑Baptiste has distinguished herself through a remarkable combination of academic excellence and service. She has served in numerous leadership roles while maintaining a strong academic record, including multiple semesters on the Dean’s List and several scholarships and awards.

Jean‑Baptiste stands out as a leader through her presidency of the African Student Association (ASA), where she transformed the organization into a vibrant hub for cultural engagement and cross‑community collaboration. As president, she helped expand student connections across campus and beyond through immersive events such as African Night Para la Gente, a large‑scale cultural celebration that brings together students and community members from across Vermont through food, music, and dance traditions spanning multiple continents.

In addition to ASA, Jean‑Baptiste has supported students in a wide range of roles, including as a Community Liaison for the Mosaic Intercultural Center, mentor in the Summer Enrichment Scholars Program, orientation leader, and supervisor at the Exam Proctoring Center. She has also contributed her creativity and leadership as a member and choreographer for Afro‑Fusion Dance and as a walk coach for the Black Student Union Fashion Show.
