VoIP Conversion

We are in the process of replacing the PBX system that was installed at the University over 20 years ago. Many features are no longer supported due to the outdated technology. We are migrating to a Voice over Internet Protocol platform (VoIP).

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) platform is a network based system which allows more flexibility and independence on the part of the user.  It requires new phones and adequate wiring.  There are two types of phones that we are using.  A physical phone (Cisco) and a virtual phone (Jabber) that is installed on your computer.  A standard Cisco phone is $285.00.  The initial telephone and voicemail setup will be done by our telecommunications staff. After the initial set-up and installation, each individual will have the ability to change their own voicemail password.  Different display backgrounds will also be available so that each person can make adjustments that best work for them.

Below are the different documents to help new users navigate their new phones:

Cisco Web Inbox (pdf)

Cisco Personal Connections Assistant (PCA) (pdf)

Cisco 8841-8851 Quick Start Guide (pdf)

Cisco 7965 Quick Start Guide (pdf)

How much will it cost?

Telecommunications and Network Services will be charging for the cost of the phone and the basic materials.  No labor will be charged for a phone upgrade from the current PBX system to the VOIP system.

Cisco Jabber is also an option for many departments who need to have the flexibility of a VoIP system but cannot afford to do a full phone system upgrade yet.  The Jabber platform allows your mobile device, laptop or computer to be an extension of your work phone. You can receive and make calls from your UVM extension when using the Jabber app on your device. A physical desk phone is no longer required.  Your cell phone will continue to work with your normal phone number as well.

In order to use Jabber, the department needs to convert to VoIP.  UVM Telcom will need to do a review of the department’s location on campus as there needs to be adequate wiring or wireless signal for the system to work.  There will still be a $50.00 per month charge for the use and maintenance of the UVM phone number and system.  Please contact us at 656-8888 or network.services@uvm.edu for more information.

Schedule – Buildings currently being cutover

When will the cutover begin in my building?

Please have your manager / department head contact network.services@uvm.edu to find out when your department is scheduled for an upgrade.

Convert My Phone – An individual can contact us to upgrade their phone.  There is a cost involved so we will need a chart string.  There are some drawbacks to having a separate telephone system from your co-workers.  Please contact Telecommunications and Network Services to find out more information.

Convert my Department – A department can contact us to upgrade their phones.  There is a cost involved for the phone so we will need a chart string.  Please have your manager / department head contact Telecommunications and Network Services to find out more information.
