What You Need to Know About Your Financial Aid Budget
Your financial aid budget is designed to assist with basic living expenses incurred during the financial aid year. It is not tailored to individual living expenses or choices. Students who sign 12-month leases and/or who do not live with a roommate should keep in mind that the aid budget is designed to cover less than 12 months (due to the Vermont Integrated Curriculum) and assumes that students will be sharing living expenses with a roommate or partner. Learn more about direct deposit and our refund policy.
Financial Aid Appeals (Budget Increases):
The following are examples of financial aid appeals. To inquire about your eligibility, or to request one of the following, please contact the SFS Satellite office. Approved appeals generally entail an increase to your Federal loan(s); increasing your debt.
Health Insurance
If you have enrolled in the UVM Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), you may request an increase in your financial aid budget to assist with a portion of this fee (it will be prorated based on the academic year length). Non-UVM plans, which are generally less expensive, do not qualify for a budget increase.
Students with Dependent Children
This can include childcare costs not to exceed $224 per week for the weeks you are enrolled, and/or a general dependent maintenance allowance. (Married students may require prorated formula due to spousal support).
Miscellaneous Extenuating Circumstances
Students who feel they have extenuating circumstances or costs that deviate from the typical budget may apply for a general cost of attendance increase by contacting the Medical Student Financial Services Coordinator.
Fourth Year: Expenses Associated with Residency Preparation
Extra loan funds are available to assist with ERAS/NRMP fees and residency interview travel (airfare, hotels, etc.). Amounts vary based on specialty plans, geographic locations of interviews, number of programs being applied to, etc. This appeal is not available until November of your 4th year.
Mandatory Comprehensive Fee
The comprehensive fee is a fee paid by all students in support of programs and services that support student success and strengthen the University community. The Comprehensive Fee supports a wide range of services, including those that students have access to whether taking their courses on campus or through remote/online options. The Comprehensive Fee supports the University’s maintenance of critical academic, athletic, health, technology, and community infrastructure, as well as library resources, academic support services, online learning platforms, career counseling, student organizations, and more.
