Each year on April 20, the Wellness Environment learning community (WE) hosts a cost- and substance-free 5K fun run and walk open to all. Now in its eighth year, this yearly tradition brings together communities with a group race, free food trucks, games, raffles, and more. This year was 80s themed, bringing a rainbow of neon, scrunchies, leg warmers, and more. Participants of all ages were in attendance, as well as some canine besties.

“The event was created as an opportunity to celebrate building healthy brains by moving our bodies,” says Dr. Jeff Retew, Director of the WE learning community. “Our annual 5K is a community and family-friendly event on a day when there’s another certain celebration that happens every year. We wanted to give folks other opportunities to engage and get outside.”

Luke Miklus, a senior track and cross-country runner at Essex High School, nabbed first place ahead of nearly 800 participants. Congratulations to Luke and to everyone who took part. We'll see you next year—same time, same place!
